Step 1: Measure and Design

• Measure the Space:

  Measure the height, width, and depth of the area where the wardrobe will be fitted. Write down the measurements, ideally on a 3D diagram. 
  Note: The depth you can build your own fitted wardrobe will likely be constrained by the material you source, our standard depth is 600 mm.

• Decide on the Design:

  Determine the layout of your wardrobe, including the number of shelves, drawers, and hanging space. 
  Note: Be aware of the constraints of material and part geometry, please see our constraints below for reference

• Draw a Plan:

  Sketch a detailed plan of your wardrobe, including all compartments and their dimensions.

Step 2: Prepare the Materials

• Choose the type of wood or MDF for your wardrobe.

• Cut the Panels:

  Cut the panels to size based on your measurements. Most hardware stores offer cutting services if you don't have the tools. 
  Note: You will often need to adjust panels when installing, therefore its useful to have at least the basic equipment at home.

Step 3: Build the Frame

Step 3 in how to build your own fitted wardrobe is building your wardrobe frame, this is the heart of your wardrobe, getting this right sets you up for success.

• Assemble the Frame:

  Using your cut panels, start by assembling the outer frame of the wardrobe. Attach the sides, top, and bottom panels using screws and a drill. 

• Secure to Wall:

  Secure the frame to the wall for stability. Use wall plugs and long screws to ensure a strong hold. 
  Note: We would not recommend using any adhesives for assembly, especially attaching the frame to the wall, this will make it extremely difficult to make minor adjustments and easy removal impossible.

Step 4: Add Internal Dividers and Shelves

Step 4 in how to build your own fitted wardrobe is adding internal dividers and shelves, this is where your dream wardrobe starts to come to life.

• Cut and Fit Dividers:

  Cut the internal dividers and fit them into place according to your plan. Secure them with screws. 

• Install Shelves:

  Use shelf brackets and supports to install the shelves. Make sure they are level. 
  Note: We’d recommend using a spirit level to check the shelves.

Step 5: Add Doors 

Step 5 in how to build your own fitted wardrobe is adding your doors, take care when attaching your hinges as you don’t want to be adjusting these after once the wood frame has already been drilled.

• Cut Door Panels:

  Cut the door panels to size. Door panels can be purchased and cut to size, or you can have a look at our door options which are all made to measure and come in varying designs to fit your style and requirements. 

• Attach Hinges:

  Fix the hinges to the doors first, then attach them to the wardrobe frame. Ensure the doors align properly and can open and close smoothly. 

Step 6: Finishing Touches

• Sand the Wardrobe:

  Sand all surfaces to smooth out any rough edges. 

• Paint or Stain:

  Apply paint or wood finish to the wardrobe. Allow it to dry completely.

• Attach Handles:

  Fix the handles or knobs to the doors.  
  Note: Don’t rush adding handles, care and attention measuring and marking the location to fit the handles pays off in the final presentation.

Step 7: Install Additional Features

Step 7 in how to build your own fitted wardrobe is fitting the additional features to tailor your storage solution, from draws to hanging rails.

• Drawers:

  If your design includes drawers, assemble them separately and slide them into the designated spaces. 

• Hanging Rails:

  Install hanging rails for clothes. Secure them to the sides of the wardrobe with screws. 

• Lighting:

  Enhance your wardrobe with integrated lighting. Adding LED strip lights or spotlights can make it easier to find items and give your wardrobe a luxurious feel. Be sure to plan for wiring and placement of lights to achieve optimal illumination. 
  Note: Its often easiest to use battery powered lights instead of wiring into the mains, it sames time and keeps the installation simple.

Important Considerations  

Safety and Manpower:

Building a fitted wardrobe is a project that often requires at least two people, especially when assembling and installing large panels. Always prioritise safety by wearing protective gear such as safety goggles and gloves and using the appropriate tools correctly. 

 Removing Existing Furniture:

Before starting your new wardrobe project, you may need to remove any existing fitted furniture. This can be a time-consuming task, so plan accordingly and ensure you have the necessary tools and help.
